The Vrba Ten

Southern Comfort

I am a Southern Girl. I have the accent, tenacity, recipes and worn boots to prove it. But I grew up not only disconnected from my culture...I denied it. I spent most of my life trying to escape what I viewed as an unfortunate affiliation. This fact is funny to me now.

My mind and heart have opened to the grace of the South. Not only have I made peace with my heritage, I am grateful for it. I believe my work reflects the Southern calm that has washed over me.

In many ways, my photographs are like my children. I care for them, protect them and send them out into the world when they're ready to go. These ten images are like the sweet and patient children who have been quietly waiting for their turn. I love them all the more for their endurance. They are ready to go.
